Any undesirable physical, chemical or biological substance or matter in water is called as a CONTAMINANT.
Health Contaminants: Contaminants that are known to cause health risks are called “Health Contaminants”. These include:
- Heavy metals such as lead, arsenic, mercury, etc.
- Chemicals such as pesticides, herbicides, insecticides, volatile organic compounds, THMs, Nitrates etc.
- Microbiological contaminants including bacteria, coliform bacteria (e.g. E. coli), viruses and parasites and cysts (e.g. cryptosporidium & giardia).
Aesthetic Contaminants: Contaminants that affect the taste, odor or look of water or that cause stains on plumbing fixtures are called “Aesthetic Contaminants”. These do not pose a direct health risk and include:
- Chlorine or chloramine taste and odor
- Sediment
- Water hardness
- Iron, Manganese or Sulfur gas, etc.
